Site comparison

Trainsplit (used for this research)

  • National Rail accredited, no booking fee
  • Found split tickets automatically where available
  • Direct URL for this search: https://trainsplit.com/results?FromStation=7082630&ToStation=7029680&OutboundDate=09/11/2026&OutboundTime=15:00&Adults=1&Railcard=1TST&OpenReturn=false

LNER

  • Does not run direct York → Manchester Piccadilly. LNER serves the ECML (York → Leeds, Edinburgh, London). For Manchester, you’d need LNER York→Leeds then change to TPE — no advantage over booking direct TPE.
  • LNER’s website would sell through-ticket combinations, but the pricing would be the same National Rail fares.

Trainline

  • Geo-redirects to en-us from the homelab IP; not practical to use from server-side.
  • Would show the same TPE fares — Trainline charges no booking fee on standard fares, but their SplitSave feature is equivalent to Trainsplit’s split ticketing.
  • If booking from a UK IP/personal device, worth a quick comparison.

TrainPal (Trip.com)

  • Cross-check from Aug 2026 benchmark showed Trainsplit cheaper by ~£19 on a different route. Same National Rail fares, but TrainPal’s split algorithm differs.
  • Captcha-gated (jigsaw slider) — not practical for automated search.
  • Worth checking manually from Joe’s phone if desired.

SplitMyFare

  • Frequently errors from the homelab (“Something went wrong”). Same Raileasy/Trainsplit engine underneath — no independent data.

Key notes

  1. Book early. Advance fares only go up. These £9.90 prices are current as of 3 Sep 2026 — they could increase as the date approaches.
  2. Trains are TPE. The York→Manchester route is TransPennine Express territory. No LNER direct service exists.
  3. Advance = train-specific, non-refundable. If you miss the train, the ticket is void. Build in buffer.
  4. E-ticketable. No paper ticket collection needed — show the barcode on your phone.
  5. AO Arena is a 2-minute walk from Manchester Piccadilly. Exit the station, cross the road, it’s right there.
  6. Friday evening = peak demand. Concert nights at AO Arena mean busy trains. Book ASAP.
